Curated by Fabian Knierim within the Month of Photography

A scratch extends across the entire length of the picture. Not a small abrasion, but a veritable gash. One almost hears the crunching sound the tool must have made. Traditionally, a photograph’s surface is sacrosanct. Its impeccable integrity has been law from the medium’s dawn to the present. However, Lipuš’s scratchings are no declamatory gestures of iconoclastic fury. Rather, tearing up the surface is his means of exemplarily retracing the opening of a medium that has long been negotiated on absolute categories—analog/digital, document/dramatization, authentic/manipulated, etc.—thus creating blue spaces of possibility.
